The Himachal Pradesh State Mountain Bike (MTB) Selection Trials 2026 concluded as a resounding success in the breathtaking, high-altitude landscape of Kardang Village, Keylong, Lahaul & Spiti. Organized by the Himachal Pradesh Cycling Association (HimCycling) under the aegis of the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) with support from it's district unit LSCA (Lahaul Spiti Cycling Association), the two-day flagship event brought together top-tier mountain bikers from across the state to compete for coveted spots on the official Himachal Pradesh squad.

Conquer the Heights: The Technical Track at Kardang Village

Testing grit, stamina, and bike handling on one of the most challenging high-altitude terrain circuits in the Himalayas, Kardang Village provided a spectacular backdrop for off-road cycling. Situated at an elevation exceeding 10,000 feet, the course challenged athletes with sharp technical descents, steep rock gardens, switchbacks, and low-oxygen conditions.

The demanding course served as an ideal benchmark for state selectors, ensuring that athletes representing Himachal Pradesh are thoroughly conditioned for national-level competitions.

Technical Precision and Safety-First Execution

Himcycling maintained high operational and safety standards throughout the event with the help of commissaire Mr. Kartik Sharma and Mr. Gurpreet Singh, appointed official from CFI, that includes:

  1. Strict Safety Compliance: Every participant underwent mandatory pre-race safety checks, ensuring helmets, protective gear, and braking systems met CFI technical guidelines.
  2. Comprehensive Bike Inspections: On-site mechanical inspections prevented mechanical breakages and guaranteed fair play across all race heats as per the regulations of UCI.
  3. On-Site Emergency Support: A dedicated medical unit and basic life support ambulance were stationed along the course throughout the competition to ensure immediate care if needed.
  4. Seamless Timings & Flag-Offs: Registration, bib distribution, and race flag-offs proceeded precisely on schedule, showcasing professional race management.

Broad District Participation Across All Age Divisions

The 2026 trials witnessed strong participation across all recognized categories, highlighting the rapid growth of mountain biking grassroots culture in Himachal Pradesh:

  1. Elite & Under-23 Divisions: Featured seasoned athletes demonstrating tactical pacing, technical line choices, and endurance over multi-lap Cross-Country Olympic (XCO) courses.
  2. Junior, Sub-Junior & Youth Categories: Highlighted a surging wave of young local talent from districts including Una, Solan, Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, and Lahaul & Spiti.
  3. Downhill (DH) Demonstration: Showcased high-speed gravity racing skills, precise cornering, and terrain navigation down technical alpine slopes.

Road to the Nationals: Representing Himachal in Odisha

The success of the Keylong selection trials marks a key milestone for mountain biking in the region. Selected riders will represent Himachal Pradesh at the 23rd Senior, Junior & Sub Junior National Mountain Bike Cycling Championships in Mahendragiri, Odisha, scheduled for October 1–4, 2026. Armed with high-altitude preparation and rigorous selection testing, the Himachal state team is poised to deliver strong performances on the national stage.
